In Georgetown most of the colonial wooden builders (of which there are still many, albeit fading) have Demerara Shutters. These are louvered wooden shutters with window boxes at the bottom. Some of these boxes used to carry a large slab of ice to provide 'air conditioning'. As ice was imported from the UK (mainly by Wieting & Richter, a shipping company still operating in Georgetown) ,and at least 50% was lost during transit in the absence of refrigerators, this was clearly only for the very wealthy!
